The Laboratory for Manufacturing Systems and Automation (LMS) of University of Patras is under the supervision of Professor George Chryssolouris. LMS is involved in a number of EU funded research projects in a variety of disciplines with about 70 researchers organised in different research groups. Particular emphasis is given to the co-operation with European industry. LMS performs Research and Development (R&D) work related mainly to the following areas: Innovative Manufacturing Processes, Advanced Human-Centred Design Techniques including Virtual Reality, and Production Systems Planning, Control and Networking.

LMS is involved in the research and development of innovative manufacturing processes, including experimentation, monitoring, modelling and simulation, such as in laser manufacturing techniques, rapid manufacturing, milling, nano-manufacturing, process monitoring and control and lifecycle assessment. Moreover, LMS is focused on the advanced materials processing and simulation oriented to automotive and aerospace applications, production planning and simulation, flexibility in production, energy efficiency of advanced processes and environmental assessment. LMS is also involved in the research and development of advanced design techniques. Indicative fields involve: process modelling, milling process monitoring, monitoring strategies, adaptive control, tool wear monitoring, tool breakage monitoring, and sustainability issues of processing. LMS has been involved in several EU projects, as a partner and as a technical coordinator. Indicative relevant EU projects include FoFDation, MYCAR, FUTURA, e-CUSTOM, COMET, DOROTHY, LICOPRO  MASMICRO, CUSTOMFIT, VIRTUE, and REALMAN.
